Drive for innovation: New biologicals development centre of Boehringer Ingelheim

Published: 21-Nov-2024

Boehringer Ingelheim, a leading research-driven biopharmaceutical company, is dedicated to advancing innovation in areas with significant medical needs. With its primary research and development centre based in Biberach, the company employs approximately 7,500 individuals who are focused on creating human pharma, as well as animal health products

Leading the way in biopharmaceutical research

One of the recent projects undertaken by Boehringer Ingelheim was the establishment of the Biologicals Development Centre (BDC) in 2023, marking the company's largest single investment in Germany to date. This new high-tech facility is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, modern technology, a production plant, and Smart Working environments. It offers attractive workspaces for more than 500 employees, which are dedicated to developing new biopharmaceutical substances.

Elevating pharma research spaces

For the interior fit-out of the BDC, the Lindner Group installed high-quality ceiling and wall systems in the offices and cleanrooms, which not only meet the functional requirements of the pharmaceutical company but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the spaces. The LMD-L LAOLA ceiling system was specifically chosen for the office areas, featuring wave-shaped slats that provide a visually striking appearance while also creating dynamic three-dimensional effects. The curved slat ceiling is highly maintenance-friendly, can be customised, and equipped with lighting fixtures.

In the cleanroom areas, the walkable Line 80S Type 2 ceiling system was installed to facilitate easy maintenance of the building services and process media, while also offering high load-bearing capacity for maintenance personnel. This ceiling system is specially coordinated with the Lindner Multiclean PPH wall system, whose wall posts are made of high-quality stainless steel, adding a distinctive touch to the cleanroom design. Flush-mounted sockets were also integrated into the stainless steel posts, specifically developed to meet the stringent cleanroom standards of the research centre.

The tested Multiclean LVT cleanroom wall system was used in the fire protection areas.
Another highlight of this project was the development of custom media columns suitable for cleanroom environments, tailored to the client’s specific needs.

Additionally, Lindner supplied fire doors as well as double-leaf sliding doors with a break-out function, which provide sound and radiation protection while ensuring controlled access to sensitive research and production areas. These doors were carefully designed to integrate seamlessly with the wall systems, positively contributing to the modern design of the cleanroom areas.
