igus expands D1 motor control with Siemens-certified PROFINET integration

Published: 4-Jun-2025

igus has enhanced its D1 motor control system with certified PROFINET/PROFIdrive integration, enabling faster, more flexible automation in applications ranging from automotive and packaging to cleanroom environments where reliable, contamination-free control is essential

igus, a Germany-based manufacturer of motion plastics and automation solutions, has announced a significant update to its D1 motor control system, enhancing its flexibility and connectivity for industrial automation applications.

The D1 system, which is widely used for controlling electric linear drives, handling systems, and robotic axes, is now available with certified PROFINET/PROFIdrive integration.

Designed for use in a range of industrial sectors, including automotive, packaging, and cleanroom environments, the D1 motor control offers precise, reliable performance for automation tasks where contamination control and efficient, contact-free system management are critical.

The system has previously been utilised in specialist cleanroom setups for applications such as measurement and handling systems, where certified components and precise control are essential.

This latest development enables seamless, fast integration of the D1 motor control into higher-level control systems from leading manufacturers including Siemens, Beckhoff, and Wago.

By adopting Siemens-certified PROFINET, igus aims to simplify commissioning processes, reduce project lead times, and improve the performance and efficiency of automation workflows.

“Thanks to the PROFINET integration, communication between the D1 and these control systems is now completely straightforward,” explains René Erdmann, Head of Business Unit drylin® E Drive Technology at igus. “The extended connectivity eliminates the need for specialised software and in-depth technical knowledge. It is easy to embed into automation systems, shortens project times, and reduces integration and maintenance costs.”

The D1 motor control offers fast cycle times between eight to 16 milliseconds, ensuring rapid response in dynamic applications. Its compatibility with stepper, DC, and EC/BLDC motors makes it suitable for a wide range of uses.

The system can be operated intuitively via a web interface, allowing users to set positions, speeds, accelerations, and motion profiles without requiring additional software. Existing interfaces such as CANopen and Modbus TCP (gateway) are also supported, providing further integration flexibility within established automation environments.

“With the PROFINET/PROFIdrive integration, which has also been certified by Siemens, we want to offer design engineers an even more flexible and future-proof solution that further increases the performance and efficiency of their automation processes,” Erdmann adds.

The new PROFINET-compatible D1 motor control is available immediately, with older models also eligible for a free update.

Users can access detailed tutorial videos, a motor control selection guide, and a range of free sample programmes through the igus dryve experience platform, designed to reduce system integration time and costs.
