Flow control specialist Bürkert has developed the Type 8098 FLOWave flowmeter.
The new piece of equipment uses surface acoustic waves (SAW) technology to provide high-precision flow measurement while preventing biofilm formation in Water For Injection (WFI) loops.
A WFI loop refers to a closed circuit system in the pharmaceutical industry that distributes the highly purified and sterile water used in the production of injectable medications, and is maintained in a continuous loop to ensure consistent quality and purity throughout the distribution system.
The flow measurement technology
FLOWave operates by generating surface acoustic waves that travel through the fluid.
By calculating time differences proportional to flow, the device measures real-time volume flow rate, cumulative volume, and flow velocity, alongside temperature.

Unlike traditional flowmeters, these measurements are achieved independently of fluid conductivity or entrained bubbles
Performance and precision
High-accuracy flow measurement is critical for monitoring flow velocity and temperature in WFI systems, ensuring sufficient turbulence to prevent biofilm formation.
FLOWave achieves an accuracy of 0.4% with a repeatability deviation of just 0.2%, guaranteeing a stable and reliable flow rate.
A practical option for WFI loop management in the pharmaceutical industry.
By optimising precision flow management, the technology also improves pump efficiency, preventing excessive pump speeds that lead to increased energy consumption and wear.
Unlike traditional sensors that require direct media contact, SAW technology ensures consistent accuracy with minimal maintenance and calibration needs.
Hygienic and durable design
FLOWave’s contactless design eliminates contamination risks associated with in-line sensors that may accumulate bacteria.
Its straight-through measuring tube prevents dead zones where particles and microorganisms could gather.
Constructed from 316L stainless steel, the flowmeter is resistant to corrosion and fully compatible with CIP/SIP cleaning protocols.

The compact and lightweight design allows for easy installation by a single engineer without the need for lifting apparatus.
Additionally, FLOWave supports all modern digital communication protocols, simplifying integration into existing pharmaceutical infrastructure.
Meeting pharmaceutical standards
With its precise performance, hygienic construction, and long-term reliability, FLOWave meets the highest pharmaceutical industry standards, including FDA conformity and ASME BPE compliance.
Bürkert also supplies essential components for WFI distribution systems, including diaphragm valves, point-of-use (POU) valves, control valves, and POU batching systems.
By integrating SAW technology with a durable design, FLOWave provides accurate flow measurement, improved efficiency, and enhanced hygiene, making it a practical option for WFI loop management in the pharmaceutical industry.
