The semiconductor packaging and test services provider has begun to expand cleanroom and testing capacity as US chip manufacturing ramps up

Amkor Technology has broken ground on a $7bn semiconductor packaging and test campus in Peoria, Arizona, marking a major investment in US chip manufacturing capacity.

Once operational, Amkor states that the Peoria campus will become one of the largest semiconductor packaging and test facilities in the country.

“We’re building a facility to meet our customers’ most advanced needs that will help shape the future of semiconductor manufacturing in the United States,” said Giel Rutten, Amkor President and CEO. “Arizona offers the right mix of talent, infrastructure, and industry presence, and we’re proud to deepen our roots here.”

The new site will feature more than 750,000 sqft of cleanroom space and is expected to create up to 3,000 skilled jobs across engineering, operations and support roles.

The facility will expand Amkor’s advanced greenfield packaging and testing capabilities, helping the company serve growing demand for high-performance chips used in artificial intelligence, automotive systems and consumer electronics.

Construction has already begun on the first phase of the development, with completion scheduled for 2027. Production is due to start in 2028.

The project is being supported by state and federal funding, including incentives from the US CHIPS and Science Act, which aims to strengthen the domestic semiconductor supply chain and reduce reliance on overseas manufacturing.

Executives from Amkor joined local and federal officials at the recent groundbreaking ceremony, where the company highlighted the strategic importance of building advanced semiconductor infrastructure within the US.

Howard Lutnick, US Secretary of Commerce, said: “Our partnership with Amkor will bring high volume advanced packaging to the US for the first time, supporting our leading AI industry capabilities and American innovation.”

Amkor’s Arizona investment forms part of a broader global expansion strategy to enhance its advanced packaging capabilities.

Earlier this year, the company announced plans for a new cleanroom facility in Vietnam to support increasing demand across the Asia–Pacific region. Together, these projects reflect Amkor’s commitment to building a resilient, geographically diversified manufacturing network to meet the evolving requirements of the semiconductor industry.
