Seidenader BIM detects particles and defects in IV bags

Published: 4-Dec-2009

Seidenader Maschinenbau, a German supplier of automatic inspection machines for the pharmaceutical industry, has developed an automatic inspection system for flexible IV bags.

The company says the market share of IV bags has been increasing, especially in the area of large volume parenterals. While bags are light, transparent and do not break as easily as IV glass bottles, they have to be inspected for particles and imperfections just as any other parenteral product. In the past this has been difficult to automate because of the flexibility of the IV bag and its oval shape.

The company worked with a supplier of IV products on the design of an automatic inspection machine that combines a unique handling concept and high-resolution cameras.

The Seidenader BIM inspects bags for visual particles in solutions, for the correct welding of seams and the functionality of ports and connections, at speeds of up to 150 containers/min – from 50ml to 1,000ml – without requiring change parts.

The company says the Seidenader BIM meets cGMP and GAMP regulations and will be documented to US Food and Drug Administration standards.
