Clean Modules overcomes a major construction hurdle
Clean Modules, a specialist supplier of modular prefabricated cleanrooms, faced one of its toughest challenges during the first phase of a 408m2 new aseptic pharmacy unit for the St Georges Hospital NHS Trust, in south London.
The challenge was to move a steel structure including 14 modules and other major components over a six-storey building containing operational hospital wards and surgeries and assemble everything on site with minimal disruption to hospital activities and local traffic.
Achievement of this feat required military-style project planning and a strong working relationship between the Clean Modules' installation team, the hospital and external authorities. The operation involved a massive 500 tonne capacity, a three-part crane with 60m extension, a fleet of articulated lorries, and calm weather conditions to enable the lift to take place.
Minimal disruption
In the interests of safety, the hospital authorities demanded areas under the lift were closed, which included wards and the canteen. Outside, the police and London buses were involved with temporary diversion of bus routes and traffic as first the crane arrived, followed by the precisely timed arrival of the lorry fleet. Clean Modules also had 10 lift marshals strategically placed to ensure no risks were taken.
Clean Modules specialises in the turnkey design, construction and project management of cleanroom installations, controlled environments, clean air and conditioning systems. In addition to specialist container and modular cleanrooms, the company has expertise in pharmaceutical, medical, hospital, and biotechnology applications within customers’ buildings and as stand-alone facilities.
