US pharma facility uses new cleanroom technology
The University of Kentucky in Lexington, USA has opened the Centre for Pharmaceutical Science and Technology (CPST).
The CPST is the largest sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing site in the state, and is said to be unique among other sites worldwide because it is the first to produce cytotoxic and non-cytotoxic drugs simultaneously under the same roof.
The facility cost US$17m and its 20,000 ft2 will be used for the analysis, validation, formulation and manufacture of sterile drug products for early phase clinical trials. In a departure from traditional cleanroom processing, the CPST is equipped with custom-made mobile isolators and is able to separate cytotoxic and non-cytotoxic drugs. Scientists can switch from one project to another without the risk of cross-contamination.
In addition, the site can produce sterile liquids for injection and freeze dry injectables. ‘The CPST also will be a magnet that draws a variety of health care companies to the area’, CPST managing director Frank Manella said.
