TT completes commission for UK biotechnology facility
TT has completed a fast track turnkey contract for the detailed design, construction and commissioning of the UK’s National Industrial Biotechnology Facility.
The National Industrial Biotechnology Facility (NIBF) is an industrially focused service within the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) at Wilton, Redcar. It comprises a development laboratory and pilot-plant capabilities.
Owned and operated by CPI, the NIBF is available for producing microbial proteins and enzymes and cells for biocatalysis and for biotransformations at pilot scale. Downstream chemical processing will allow recovery of low molecular weight metabolites and polymers (e.g. DNA) for non-clinical use.
The TT contract covered the bioprocessing facility, biolaboratories, cleanrooms, biotechnology processing equipment and clean/critical utility systems. The bioprocessing facility comprises 5, 50, 750 litre fermenters, with bespoke and novel downstream processing equipment such as oscillatory baffle flow reactors and high shear homogenisers.
TT’s in-house process engineering division were also responsible for the selection and integration of leading edge advanced technology laboratory (HPGLC, GCMS, LCMS) and test instruments (NIR).
State of the art DCS systems were utilised for process controls and data capture for scale up, enabling worldwide interfacing and knowledge exchange with universities.
The contract had a value of £5m and the project duration was 12 months.
