Thermo Fisher has launched its new 1500 Series Class II, Type A2 Biological Safety Cabinet, which has been designed with customer feedback in mind

Thermo Fisher Scientific, a US-based scientific instrumentation and laboratory solutions company, has launched its new 1500 Series Class II, Type A2 Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC).

The new 1500 Series BSC is designed for academic, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and routine laboratory environments.

The new BSC aims to improve user comfort, operational convenience, and workflow efficiency while ensuring compliance with the NSF/ANSI 49 safety standard for design, performance, and protection.

Building on the success of the popular 1300 Series, the 1500 Series A2 BSC features significant enhancements in airflow control and an updated ergonomic design informed by direct customer feedback.

Central to its safety performance are advanced technologies such as Thermo Scientific (trademarked) SmartFlow (trademarked) Plus and Thermo Scientific  (trademarked) Digital Airflow Verification (DAVe (trademarked) Plus).

Thermo Scientific SmartFlow Plus is an airflow management system that continuously adjusts inflow and downflow velocities in real time.

Thermo Scientific DAVe is a system that monitors airflow conditions and alerts operators to deviations that could compromise containment and sample integrity.

Douglas Wernerspach, Senior Business Director of CO2/BSC at Thermo Fisher Scientific, emphasised the importance of safety cabinets in laboratory compliance and performance: “The 1500 Series A2 BSC delivers advanced safety features with an intuitive design, empowering users to achieve consistent, efficient, and reliable performance in critical lab environments.”

The 1500 Series is equipped with a 7-inch high-resolution touchscreen featuring a graphical user interface, enabling simplified operation, real-time safety monitoring, and programmable ultraviolet (UV) light cycles to support sterile workflows.

The cabinet’s SmartClean front window design improves accessibility for cleaning, while integrated LED lighting ensures bright, uniform illumination with reduced energy consumption, contributing to sustainability goals.

Additional features include a dual blower system with independent downflow and exhaust fans to maintain optimal airflow balance, negative pressure zones between cabinet walls for enhanced protection, and an innovative SmartPort that neatly accommodates tubing and cables to reduce clutter within the workspace.

Key applications for the 1500 Series Biological Safety Cabinet encompass cell culture and molecular biology workflows in pharmaceutical and biotech sectors, biobanking, sample preparation, bioprocessing, vaccine development, as well as academic and government research.
