The Institute for Animal Health gets a new identity
Becomes The Pirbright Institute on 4 October
The UK’s Institute for Animal Health (IAH) will become The Pirbright Institute from 4 October.
The Pirbright Institute will continue to carry out the IAH’s world leading surveillance into virus diseases of livestock and viruses that spread from animals to humans on a state-of-the-art redeveloped campus in Pirbright, Surrey.
Significant investment in research infrastructure by the UK’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Institute (BBSRC) will shortly begin to be realised with the completion of a new high-containment laboratory for 150 staff. The £100m+ building should be handed over to the Institute from the contractors early in 2014.
Last year David Willetts, the Minister for Universities and Science, announced a further £100m+ investment by the Government and BBSRC in the next phase of the development of the facilities at Pirbright.
In 2011/12, BBSRC invested more than £76.9m in research, training and infrastructure at The Pirbright Institute. In May 2012 it announced a commitment of £38m as the first phase of a five-year investment in the organisation.
BBSRC chief executive Douglas Kell said: “The institute has a long and proud history. Over the last century the different parts of the current institute have had a range of names. The new identity, as The Pirbright Institute, represents the coming together of institute science on a single site, the strength of the new science strategy and is a sign of the bright future for Pirbright with over £250m of investment committed to the institute in the coming years.”
The change to The Pirbright Institute name is part of a new visual identity for the institute, including logo and colours.
