Pack permeability determined

Published: 26-Jan-2004

One of the most damaging pharmaceutical contaminants is water. Moisture can seep through any form of packaging – from unitary dose blister packs to sachets, syringes, capsules and even bottles. It can reduce efficacy and slash shelf life. Versaperm, specialists in water vapour measurement technology, has two simple solutions. First, a meter which can measure the permeability of a package extremely quickly, sometimes in as little as 30 minutes as opposed to several days for conventional testing; and second, a lab service, which takes the reading for you. Both the loss or gain of water can have potentially significant effects. Water loss may lead to a change in the physical properties of a solid preparation, or a change in viscosity and concentration of vital components in liquid products. Water gain can cause sensitive ingredients to swell. Powders intended for inhalation are particularly sensitive as their particle size is critical for correct delivery and is significantly influenced by the moisture content. Versaperm's WVTR meter claims to be versatile and reliable and gives highly reproducible results. It can be used to test virtually all packaging types. It also allows the temperature and humidity of the sample to be accurately controlled. Results are clearly shown on the equipment's display and readings can be output digitally or to a chart recorder.
