The Allegheny Health Network team has just celebrated the opening of their new Melanoma Lab and Clinic at West Penn Hospital, a two-part construction project consisting of an 8,000 sqft melanoma and dermatological skin care clinic and a state-of-the-art cancer research laboratory!
DesignGroup took part in the project alongside partners HF Lenz Company, Taylor Structural Engineers, and MBM Contracting.
One of these cleanrooms is used for genetically modifying live viruses to develop melanoma cancer treatments
The Melanoma Clinic consists of 13 exam rooms, 2 procedure rooms, a whole-body laser scanning room, and several offices, consult rooms, storage rooms, etc. As a multi-disciplinary practice, the clinic serves as a one-stop shop for skin care, ranging from routine check-ups to skin cancer diagnosis and treatments.
To support the centre, the cancer-fighting research lab was designed and constructed in tandem on the same floor. This robust laboratory features 3,500 sqft of space consisting of three distinct zones: a general research area, a specialised testing lab, and two ISO Class 7 cleanrooms. One of these cleanrooms is used for genetically modifying live viruses to develop melanoma cancer treatments!
