EXCLUSIVE: Case study: C-CUBE's first biotech modular project in Europe

Published: 24-Oct-2024

Christophe Mermaz, Co-Founder and CEO of C-CUBE shared with Cleanroom Technology the process and methodology behind building its first biotech modular project in Europe

C-CUBE is a Singapore-based company with a production facility in Vietnam and operations in Switzerland.

The company specialises in designing, supplying, and installing modular facilities for life sciences, backed by investment from the Saint-Gobain group.

Our modular design allows us to create various layouts using standardised components for modules, floors, walls, windows, doors, and cladding

The Saint-Gobain group is a large multinational corporation based in France. It is most known for producing materials and solutions for the construction, industrial, and consumer markets.

Revolutionising life sciences facilities: From traditional to industrial

C-CUBE is pioneering a fast, cost-effective, and sustainable approach to constructing laboratories, biotech, and vaccine production units.

C-CUBE's methodology

We have pre-engineered and standardised our modular concept to deliver high-speed, high-quality, cost effective solutions.

Our modular design allows us to create various layouts using standardised components for modules, floors, walls, windows, doors, and cladding.

Our facilities are built in a lean, industrial environment—similar to the automotive industry—rather than through conventional stick-built methods

The entire facility is first assembled at our C-CUBE factory before shipping the modules for installation at the final site.

Comprehensive solutions

We provide a complete construction solution and serve as a single point of contact throughout the project. Our offerings include building, cleanroom, MEP, HVAC, automation, and qualification.

Here’s our scope of work:

  • We engineer the cGMP facility using a modular design, charging only for the concept design.
  • Manufacturing begins upon approval of the concept design, with basic and detailed designs finalised during construction.
  • We assemble the full facility at our site and conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) with the customer.
  • The facility is then dismantled into individual modules and transported to the final location.
  • We complete the installation and qualification of the entire facility (Site Acceptance Testing - SAT).

C-CUBE's first biotech modular project in Europe

Recently, we completed a significant modular project in Europe: an inactivated virus production facility.

This facility features a 250m² footprint spread over three stories (cleanroom, ducting/piping, and technical areas) and comprises 26 modules.

This modular facility is installed outdoors, designed to be insulated, fire-resistant, airtight, and watertight, marking it as the first of its kind in Europe.

The offsite construction took one year, followed by four months for onsite installation and successful handover to the customer (SAT).

C-CUBE has demonstrated that its modular technology is effective and delivers the anticipated results. We aim to become the fastest company globally to construct high-tech cGMP facilities.

In addition to small-scale biotech facilities under 500m², we have developed a new concept for large cleanroom spaces (500 m² and above, with no height constraints) targeting the pharmaceutical and food sectors.

This concept allows us to construct extensive clean production spaces in record time, with modular installations occurring directly outdoors.
