Ciba is to market and develop Pure Bioscience’s antimicrobial and preservative silver dihydrogen citrate for the personal care, household and industrial markets worldwide.

Water-soluble and colourless, the stabilised compound is said to incorporate easily and its sensory and toxicological properties make it suitable for cosmetic formulations.

Under the agreement, Ciba holds exclusive marketing rights for the technology in personal care applications under the trade name Ciba Tinosan SDC, while Pure will continue marketing it in other areas.

Catherine Ehrenberger, global head of Ciba’s home and personal care business, said: “With this technology from Pure Bioscience, we are able to support customers in the personal and household care industries as they strive to enhance the antimicrobial effects and shelf life of their formulations. We are especially excited about the opportunities in the cosmetics market.”

Michael L Krall, president and chief executive of Pure Bioscience, added: “Ciba’s global reach, well-established customer base and commitment to innovation make it an excellent partner to drive silver dihydrogen citrate into the personal care, household and industrial markets. Our technology addresses the requirements of these industries with its quick and broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, low toxicity, residual protection and the inability of bacteria to form resistance to it.”
