EU biocides listing deadline has passed
Exceptions apply for some biocidal products where an active substance dossier has yet to be validated by a national regulator
Cleanroom companies seeking to ensure their biocidal product supplies are legal in the European Union can check European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) databases, now a September 1 deadline for listing active biocidal substance and product suppliers has passed. Under the biocidal products regulation (528/2012), henceforth biocidal products cannot be sold within the EU unless the substance supplier or product supplier is listed by ECHA within a product type directory.
Exceptions apply for some biocidal products where an active substance dossier has yet to be validated by a national regulator. ECHA keeps its register up to date.
An ECHA note stressed some applications for inclusion on the list were still outstanding and they may be included later. These included Propan-2-ol-based disinfectants supplied by the UK's PDI; and ethanol-based disinfectants made by Spain’s Azucarera Montero, PDI, the British arm of Cargill, Poland’s Przedsiębiorstwo Handlowo Produkcyjne Wiesław Wawrzyniak, and France’s Tereos France.
Another batch of pending applications include disinfectants based on active chlorine generated from sodium chloride by electrolysis – here from Denmark’s Adept Water Technologies, the Netherlands’ AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals, Poland’s Amilia,; Sweden’s Anolytech, Belgium’s AutoJet Technologies, Spain’s Aquaeca Izumrud, Germany’s Gruenbeck Wasseraufbereitung, and more.
Meanwhile, the first two applications for an EU-wide authorisation for biocidal products have been received by ECHA. These products are iodine-based and used as disinfectants for veterinary hygiene purposes, said ECHA.
The agency has also updated an app that helps biocidal product market approval applicants write product characteristic summaries – now available in 23 EU languages, plus Norwegian.
