Closed circuit breathing apparatus launched to aid rescue workers

Published: 16-Sep-2008

A four-hour closed circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA) designed for use in environments needing long-duration respiratory protection has been launched by Scott Health & Safety.

The BioPak 240 Revolution – often referred to as a re-breather – is ideal for use in applications where there is the potential for Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) environments.

IDLH exposure for long periods of time such as in decontamination, urban search and rescue, rail car accidents, tunnel extrication or collapse, structure collapse or any environment requiring fully encapsulated gas tight suit applications.

“While all closed circuit breathing apparatus perform the same basic long-duration respiratory protection function, the Scott BioPak 240 Revolution re-breather features numerous innovations that set it apart from the competition,” said Tony Pickett, Scott’s Air Supplied Product Manager. “Unlike any other CCBA, the BioPak 240 Revolution CCBA features both a quick-change cooling system that can be replaced whilst being worn and without breaking the breathing loop, plus a patented CO2 scrubbing system design that utilises solid absorbents that supports rapid deployment. These two features alone make the BioPak 240 Revolution a leader in the field of closed-circuit breathing apparatus.”

User comfort and safety are key features of the Scott BioPak 240 Revolution CCBA with an ergonomic, body-contoured design providing for a slim profile and allowing for easy use under protective gear. A fully-padded harness system positions the unit on the hips to reduce fatigue and this can be easily adjusted to fit any user size. Capable of delivering six litres of tidal volume, the Scott BioPak 240 Revolution delivers the lowest resistance, easiest breathing of any re-breather available today and can cut return service time by up to 50%.

Visual, audible and mechanical alarms alert the user to low oxygen, low battery, high temperature and a missing coolant canister. The mechanical alarm is independent and redundant to the audible and visual alarms, therefore providing an additional safety feature.

Although designed for comfort, the Scott BioPak 240 Revolution is manufactured to withstand the rigors often associated with the emergency rescue services and is rugged in construction, built from a stainless steel reinforced polymer. The Scott BioPak 240 Revolution CCBA has a lower cost of ownership than any other re-breather.

The new Scott Biopak 240 Revolution CCBA will be available to the industrial safety, first responder and military markets exclusively through Scott’s authorised distributor network.

The Scott product line includes Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus, Air-Purifying Respirators, Thermal Imaging instruments, Head, Face, Eye and Hearing protection.
