Biobased floorcovering keeps bugs at bay
Bayer MaterialScience launches polyurethane coatings for seamless antiseptic floors
The self-levelling coatings are based on Bayer MaterialScience’s Desmophen 1150 polyester resin and Desmodur VL and provide a number of advantages for renovation and refurbishment projects, the firm said.
“The technology can beautify old flooring by filling in pits, chips, cracks and spalling, eliminating areas for Staphylococcus aureus to grow. This makes them ideal for use in the healthcare sector,” said Sharon Feng, vice president, business development, Coatings, Adhesives and Specialties, Bayer MaterialScience.
The coatings are also hydrophobic and therefore remain unaffected by humidity during application. Once applied, the formulation’s urethane backbone enables energy absorption, resulting in lower impact and less chip damage.
Firms looking for an ornamental finish can apply decorative topcoats over the self-levelling coatings, which are compatible with polyaspartic, waterborne and UV topcoat systems. Both the self-levelling coatings and topcoat can be applied the same day. The result is a seamless, more antiseptic floor, said Feng.
