Tata Steel has expanded its Kalinganagar steelworks in Odisha, boosting capacity to 8 million tonnes and strengthening its position in advanced, sustainable steel manufacturing

Tata Steel, one of India’s largest and most diversified steel producers, has officially inaugurated the Phase II expansion of its integrated steel plant at Kalinganagar, Odisha.

The significant capacity enhancement, which raises the facility’s crude steel output from 3 to 8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), represents an investment of Rs 27,000 crore (approximately £2.6 billion).

The expanded plant was formally opened by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, during a ceremony attended by senior government officials, local community representatives, and Tata Steel’s leadership team, including CEO & Managing Director, T. V. Narendran.

Located in Jajpur district, the Kalinganagar facility is one of India’s most advanced steel manufacturing operations.

The plant is central to Tata Steel’s strategy to create a future-ready steel production ecosystem focused on sustainability, advanced technology, and inclusive regional development.

Speaking at the event, T. V. Narendran commented: “Kalinganagar is more than a manufacturing site for us. It symbolises what is possible when communities, government, and industry work together. This expansion reflects our deep belief in Odisha’s potential and our long-term commitment to this State. We are thankful to the Hon’ble Chief Minister, the people of Odisha, and the Government of India for their continued support. Together, we are building not just steel, but a stronger, self-reliant India.”

The expanded facility will cater to critical sectors including automotive, infrastructure, power, shipbuilding, defence, and engineering, supporting the Indian government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative.

A key feature of the Phase II expansion is the commissioning of a new blast furnace — the largest in India,  with a working volume of 5,870 cubic metres.

This unit is equipped with advanced operational features designed for long campaign life, energy efficiency, and reduced environmental impact.

Notably, it incorporates four top combustion stoves, a first in the country, alongside two preheating stoves to improve fuel efficiency in hot metal production.

Additional facilities commissioned as part of the expansion include a modern Pellet Plant, a Coke Plant, and a Cold Rolling Mill, each incorporating advanced technologies and environmentally responsible processes.
