Pharmacy to receive aseptic training
Long term care patients could receive drugs more rapidly thanks to an initiative being launched by Manor Pharmacy and Erewash Primary Care Trust - with help from the University of Derby.
The pharmacy chain, which has 46 outlets across the East Midlands, has received a service agreement to supply aseptically prepared syringes to be used for palliative care of patients across the Erewash PCT area.
Academics from the pharmacy department, based within the University's School of Science, will help train Manor Pharmacy's staff to deliver the new services.
Helen Martin, Lecturer in Pharmacy, will deliver a short course in Aseptic services to the pharmacy technicians to ensure that the technical staff are qualified to deliver quality aseptic services needed to ensure the highest levels of patient safety.
Martin said: “This is a key contract for us as Manor Pharmacy is believed to be taking a national lead in delivering this service.
“I will be training the technical staff in areas including an introduction to pharmaceutical Microbiology, Hygiene in Aseptic Unit Operations, Cleanroom Disciplines, Aseptic Manipulation and Preparation, and Stability and Compatibility,” Martin added.
“We wanted a third party to train our RPSGB-registered technical staff and the University seemed an excellent choice,” said Linda Ferguson, business development manager for Manor Pharmacy.
Feruson added: “This new approach will provide a seamless service in terms of preparation and delivery of prescriptions. Patients should notice a faster service and we will be able to track prescriptions on a daily basis as they are delivered.”
