Raumedic, a German-based developer and system supplier of polymer-based components and systems in the medical technology and pharmaceutical industry, is investing US$27.1m in a new production centre in the US. At least $10.6m of the $27.1m facility investment is earmarked for a state-of-the-art cleanroom for production of sterile medical devices.
Raumedic manufactures polymer components used in the medical and pharmaceutical industry, including high-tech catheters, drug delivery systems and moulded parts for surgical devices. The company distributes tubing, moulded parts and catheters produced in Germany to North America. The new US development centre and cleanroom production facility in Mills River in North Carolina will offer a more local service centre for Raumedic’s US customers.
A two-storey administration and production building with a total area of 60,000ft2 (5,600m2) will be built in the open countryside. Up to 22,000ft2 (2,000m2) of this will be available for production, which is due to start in January 2016. The company currently operates from a 5,500m2 Class 10,000 cleanroom (DIN EN ISO 14644 Class 7) at its headquarters in Helmbrechts and has further production facilities in Feuchtwangen and Zwönitz, Germany.
It is able to produce multilayer tubing with up to four different materials, as well as micro tubing with radiopaque stripes or multi lumen tubing with up to 13 lumens. In the field of micro-extrusion, the company produces tubing with a dimension of 0.10mm and a wall thickness of 0.04mm – the thickness of a human hair.
