Granlund acquires MEP expert Umeå to progress Swedish expansion

The acquisition has been made to strengthen the cleanroom expert’s presence in northern Sweden and adds to its existing network of subsidiaries in Stockholm and Lidköping

Granlund Group has expanded its presence in Sweden through the strategic acquisition of Umeå Projekt Team (UPT), a company specialising in MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) design and project management.

Granlund Group is a Finland-based international group of companies that specialises in technical building services design.

The group is part of the newly established Finland-based Alliance for Sustainable cleanrooms.

The move marks a significant step in Granlund’s ambition to broaden its operations in northern Sweden and enhance its technical offering in the region.

Founded in 2007, UPT employs 23 professionals and reported a turnover of €2.8m in 2024. The acquisition will see UPT become a subsidiary of Granlund Oy while continuing to operate under its existing management team and ownership structure.

Pekka Metsi, CEO of Granlund, said: “We see strong growth potential in Sweden. Our goal is to expand in our neighbouring country, both geographically and through our services. It is great to have UPT join the Granlund Group to strengthen our local expertise in MEP design.”

Tobias Broddeskog, one of UPT’s owners and Head of Marketing, views the acquisition as a valuable opportunity for growth and development.

“Granlund has strong technical expertise and long-term customer relationships. These are qualities that we also prioritise at UPT,” Broddeskog noted.

Broddeskog also highlighted the compatibility between the two companies’ cultures. “Both companies place great value on their experts, and prioritise competence development and well-being,” he added.

Expanding services and cross-border collaboration

The partnership will enable UPT to expand into new customer segments and introduce additional services.

Granlund’s expertise in areas such as energy efficiency, sustainability solutions, and the utilisation of digital tools and data management will be integrated into UPT’s offering.

Both firms share longstanding experience in the healthcare and hospital sectors, which will form a core focus of their joint activities.

The acquisition also opens opportunities for closer collaboration between Granlund’s regional office in Vaasa, Finland, and Umeå.

“This creates potential for joint projects and operational development,” said Timo Palonkoski, Granlund’s Business Development Director.

Continued growth in Sweden

Granlund already operates three subsidiaries in Sweden: two in Stockholm, specialising in electrical design and structural engineering for data centres, and one in Lidköping, which also focuses on the data centre sector.

Earlier this year, the company acquired Coordia Consult in Stockholm, and with the addition of UPT, the number of Granlund employees in Sweden will nearly double.

The current owners of UPT — Ulf Karlsson, Pär Rhenberg, Tobias Broddeskog, Thomas Gothnell, and Jon Tykosson — will remain in their respective roles within the company.

“For us at Granlund, it is important that the company’s key people continue and that we develop the business together,” Palonkoski affirmed.

This acquisition reflects Granlund’s strategic commitment to strengthening its technical capabilities and regional presence in Sweden, while promoting sustainable growth and cross-border collaboration within the Nordics.
