Cleanroom infrastructure nears completion at Vetter’s Chicago facility
Vetter will next month complete the infrastructure of the cleanrooms at its Chicago facility
Vetter, a German provider of aseptic pre-filled drug-delivery systems, will next month complete the infrastructure of the cleanrooms at its Chicago facility in the US. The site, which is an expansion of Vetter Development Service (VDS), remains on schedule to start operations at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
VDS Chicago is located at the Illinois Science and Technology Park and will support pre-clinical through to Phase II development projects.
The facility includes 24,000ft2 of microbiology and chemical laboratories – and three cleanrooms, whose infrastructure will soon be finished, including the installation of monitoring and laminar airflow equipment. Vetter will also install filling units over the coming months.
Vetter will house a Bosch MHI 2020 automated vial filler in one cleanroom, which will be used for clinical-stage, high-value biopharmaceuticals and fill 10,000 liquid or 5,000 lyophilised vials each day. Vetter is the first company to install such a system.
A second cleanroom will offer semi-automated filling of up to 500 units a day. The system will be able to fill a variety of packaging materials, including vials, syringes and cartridges. This cleanroom is intended for liquid fills, although the unit may also perform fills for non-cGMP lyophilised units.
The third cleanroom will be used for filling pre-sterilised syringes.
Vetter is an aseptic filling specialist of syringes, cartridges and vials. Based in Ravensburg, Germany, the firm also produces its own injection systems, such as the Vetter Lyo-Ject dual chamber syringe. The firm employs around 2,200 people worldwide.
