Cleanroom for cars
FORD has unveiled plans for its new engine plant to be built on the giant Dagenham estate, where production of the top-selling Fiesta ends early next year.
The expansion at Dagenham will create 500 jobs with these positions being filled by employees from other areas of the company. The Essex plant will continue to employ around 5,000 after production of the Fiesta ceases.
Kevin O'Neill, director of Ford diesel business unit, said Dagenham will now 'be at the heart of Ford's plans for further growth in the diesel market and will help us to achieve our goal of a minimum 30% diesel mix in our overall European engine production'. This will mean the first major new building on the Dagenham estate for more than 30 years. It will include a giant 'cleanroom' engine plant designed with an abundance of stainless steel, glass and a clean-air induction system making it as far removed from the old-style production line as it is possible to get.
