Bromitize shows antimicrobial promise

US company Solution BioSciences (SBS), based in Chatham, New Jersey, has launched Bromitize, a new antimicrobial system based on a patented bromine chemical technology that is designed to reduce salmonella and other carcase bacteria during poultry processing.

Said to be "effective and safe-to-use", the system can be used to disinfect and reduce bacteria in poultry pre-chill and post-chill processing steps. It allows for flexible plant use, is compatible with existing equipment and readily integrates into commercial processing lines. Replacing other chemical disinfectants in the COP (continuous online processing) and chill tank, it eliminates the need for chlorine in the chill tank. Plant studies of the Bromitize system confirm "significantly lower" bacteria count, with no effect on the carcase or browning, no odour and no effect on pH levels. Some current products leave chlorine and phosphate residue in the treatment water, which can create safety and waste water issues. As well as in the chill tank, it can also be used for COP, OLR (online reprocessing), in IOBW (inside outside bird washers), or anywhere else on the processing lines. The company has also received approval for the re-use of the water from the COP/OLR cabinets, thereby enabling further reduction of water usage during processing. On installing a system, SBS reviews customer facilities, plans the ideal locations for the system and can install it over a weekend with little or no interruption to production. It requires little space and is "33% less corrosive on plant equipment".
