MBV responds to pharma sector needs with new active microbial air sampler

Published: 17-Jul-2025

MBV has launched a new, more automated, microbial air monitoring sampler with a world-first self-aligning magnetic perforated lid

MBV, a Switzerland-based specialist in microbial air monitoring systems, has launched the MAS-100 Sirius (trademarked), its most advanced active microbial air sampler to date.

Urs Strasek, Chief Client Officer at MBV, exclusively told Cleanroom Technology that the MAS-100 Sirius was designed in direct response to increasing regulatory and technological demands within the pharmaceutical sector.

To address these changing regulations, the MAS-100 Sirius aims to support cleanroom environments with greater automation, process reliability, and digital integration.

Strasek said, “With the new MAS-100 Sirius, MBV takes microbial air sampling to the next level.”

The Sirius introduces features such as WiFi-enabled remote operation, tamper-evident data trails, and automated self-check routines

Strasek explained that the new system was developed with direct input from cleanroom professionals and is designed to address both operational and regulatory challenges faced in pharmaceutical environments.

“It is equipped with intelligent automation, digital connectivity, and a user-friendly interface,” he said. “The device minimises handling errors while maximising regulatory compliance and process safety.”

Building on the success of the MAS-100 NT, the Sirius introduces features such as WiFi-enabled remote operation, tamper-evident data trails, and automated self-check routines, all aimed at reducing user error and enhancing data integrity.

“Within MBV’s product portfolio, it represents the new high-end solution, ideal for pharmaceutical companies that not only require precise measurement but also demand secure documentation and full readiness for audits, data integrity, and Industry 4.0,” Strasek continued.

Among the key innovations is a world-first self-aligning magnetic perforated lid

“This positions the MAS-100 Sirius in the market as a strong response to the industry’s increasing regulatory and technological demands."

The MAS-100 Sirius replaces the MAS-100 NT and brings a range of new features that enhance contamination control, usability, and data management. It is designed for use in both controlled and non-controlled environments, including pharmaceutical cleanrooms, and complies with ISPE GAMP5.

The system is also fully validated in line with PDA TR #13, EU GMP Annex 1, and ISO 14698 / EN 17141.

New innovative features

Among the key innovations is a world-first self-aligning magnetic perforated lid, which includes an ergonomic, angled handle to support aseptic operation from the side.

The smooth stainless-steel housing is free of dirt traps and can be cleaned with standard disinfectants and sporicidals.

The internal sampling head can be actively decontaminated using vapourised hydrogen peroxide (VHP), further reducing the risk of secondary contamination.

The device supports both 55 mm and 90 mm agar plates as well as Growth Direct cassettes, with an adjustable plate holder that requires no tools or adapters.

It is designed for use in both controlled and non-controlled environments

It also includes automated self-check routines and a configurable interface that guides users step by step through the sampling process.

Alternatively, the unit can be controlled remotely via WiFi from outside the cleanroom.

A high flow rate of 200 SLPM shortens sampling times to support time-sensitive protocols, while a built-in leak test ensures the integrity of the perforated lid and sampler seal.

The dual-sensor design allows early detection of sensor drift, maintaining precision across multiple uses.

Supporting Strasek’s focus on audit-readiness and data reliability, the MAS-100 Sirius® includes a tamper-evident audit trail with filtering, along with error-proof data transfer via barcode or WiFi.

It integrates seamlessly with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and other environmental monitoring software and supports Active Directory login for secure user authentication.
