The pharmaceutical CDMO has broken ground on a $90m expansion of its Riverview and Lexington facilities in the US

Piramal Pharma Solutions (PPS), a global contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO), has broken ground on an expansion of two of its US manufacturing sites.

The expansion is part of a $90 million (£70 million) investment by the company.

The move reinforces the company’s commitment to supporting the growing demand for sterile injectables and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) within the pharmaceutical industry.

A subsidiary of Piramal Pharma, headquartered in Mumbai, India, PPS operates an international network of development and manufacturing facilities, offering integrated services across the drug lifecycle.

The planned expansion targets the company’s Riverview, Michigan, and Lexington, Kentucky sites, both of which play pivotal roles in PPS’s ADCelerate programme and sterile injectable services.

The expansion will add 24,000 sqft of new space

At the Riverview site, which provides drug substance development and manufacturing services, including high potency APIs (HPAPIs), the investment will support the addition of a commercial-scale suite dedicated to the production of payload-linkers.

These highly specialised components are essential to the safety, stability, and efficacy of ADC therapies. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.

Meanwhile, the Lexington facility, PPS’s primary fill/finish site for sterile injectables, will see a substantial enhancement of its manufacturing footprint.

The expansion will add 24,000 sqft of new space, incorporating a new laboratory, advanced filling line, two commercial-scale lyophilisers, an external vial washer, and a specialised capping machine.

The project is expected to be completed by late 2027 and will increase the site’s manufacturing capacity from 104 to over 240 product batches per year at peak utilisation.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Lexington site took place on 25 June 2025, marking a key milestone for both PPS and the local community.

The event was attended by company leaders, project partners, and local officials, including Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, who welcomed the investment as a positive step for the regional economy and its growing pharmaceutical sector.

The sterile injectables market is undergoing rapid growth, driven by increased medical need, regulatory approvals, and scientific advancements.

At the same time, ADC therapies are gaining significant traction in oncology, offering targeted treatment options with improved efficacy and safety profiles.

PPS’s expanded facilities aim to address these market trends, bolstering the company’s capacity to deliver integrated manufacturing solutions for complex biopharmaceutical products.

Nandini Piramal, Chairperson of Piramal Pharma, said: “Our research indicates that the sterile injectables market is projected to exceed $20 billion by 2028. This strategic investment will strengthen our ability to serve this segment and reinforce our role as a trusted global partner in biologics manufacturing.”

Peter DeYoung, Chief Executive Officer of Piramal Global Pharma, added: “ADCs are rapidly becoming one of the most effective precision immunotherapies for certain cancers. By investing in our Riverview and Lexington facilities, we will enhance our ADCelerate (trademarked) offering and meet the rising demand for high-quality, innovative treatments.”

In addition to enhancing manufacturing capacity, the Lexington expansion will create 40 new full-time jobs and further position the region as a centre for life sciences and biotechnology. The project also reflects broader industry efforts to strengthen US-based pharmaceutical manufacturing and supply chain resilience.
