Personnel airlocks, also known as anterooms or gowning rooms, help to maintain the integrity of a cleanroom.

These controlled transition spaces prevent contamination, regulate airflow, and provide personnel with a designated area to properly prepare before entering the cleanroom.

If the pressure is too low or reversed, such as when the anteroom has higher pressure than the cleanroom itself, contaminants can enter

However, like any critical component, anterooms come with their own set of challenges.

From design flaws to operational inefficiencies, this article examines ten key issues associated with personnel airlocks and their impact on cleanroom performance.

Improper design

One critical issue with personnel airlocks in cleanrooms is inadequate space planning, which can lead to overcrowding and compromise the effectiveness of contamination control.

Before constructing a cleanroom, it is important to consider whether the facility can accommodate a properly sized anteroom that aligns with operational demands.

A single anteroom may not provide enough of a barrier to prevent particulate infiltration

Key factors include the volume of the space, the number of personnel using the airlock, and the frequency of movement in and out of the cleanroom. If the anteroom is too small, poor gowning efficiencies can lead to complications.

Overcrowding

Overcrowding can make it difficult for personnel to don and doff cleanroom garments correctly, leading to improper gowning practices and an increased likelihood of contamination transfer.

A well-designed anteroom should allow for a smooth, controlled flow of personnel while maintaining the necessary pressure differentials and air cleanliness levels to ensure cleanroom integrity.
