The major UK eye health development has chosen Norwood to deliver a modular cleanroom solution

Cleanroom panelling specialist Norwood has been appointed by Bouygues UK to deliver a cleanroom facility at Oriel, a new centre for eye care, research, and education in London.

The Oriel project is currently under construction, with completion expected in 2027.

The Grade B cleanroom forms part of the new Oriel development in Camden, UK,  a joint initiative between Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and Moorfields Eye Charity.

The project will see existing services move from their current Old Street premises to a purpose-built integrated facility designed to advance patient care and medical research.

As a specialist contractor with extensive experience in controlled environments, Norwood will be responsible for delivering the cleanroom architectural package, alongside selected mechanical and electrical elements.

The company’s expert team will also support the commissioning and validation processes for this highly regulated healthcare environment.

Norwood’s scope of works includes the installation of demountable cleanroom partitions with integrated vision panels, low-level extracts, pass-through hatches, coving, doors, and a walk-on ceiling.

All components will be prefabricated at Norwood’s advanced manufacturing facility in Manchester, ensuring quality control and programme certainty.

Fully compliant with healthcare regulatory standards, Norwood’s modular system allows for rapid, clean installation while minimising on-site health and safety risks.

The demountable, recyclable design provides sustainability advantages and offers long-term flexibility, enabling healthcare operators to reconfigure the space as future clinical requirements evolve.

Josh Bannister, Managing Director at Norwood, said: “We are thrilled to contribute to such a groundbreaking project and to once again collaborate with Bouygues UK. Building on the success of our partnership at the Ray Dolby Centre at Cambridge University, it’s exciting to see modular, high-performance systems being embraced by the healthcare sector for specialised, future-ready environments.”

The new Oriel facility will bring together clinicians and researchers under one roof, fostering closer collaboration to accelerate the delivery of innovative treatments and therapies for patients.

Neil Pixsley, Project Director at Bouygues UK, added: “We're looking forward to building on our successful partnership with Norwood for the cleanroom at Oriel. Their innovative approach to modular panelling systems will be instrumental in creating a flexible healthcare environment that meets the needs of the clinicians and researchers that will be based here.”
