A new high-containment laboratory is under construction in The Gambia, for the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

Construction work is now underway on a new Containment Level 3 (CL3) laboratory at The Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

MAT (Medical Air Technology) is acting as MEP and technical support on the new project in the Gambia.

The new facility will expand the Unit’s capability to conduct high-containment infectious disease research and support a broad range of public health initiatives.

Key objectives for the MRC Unit, The Gambia include contributing to the control of infectious diseases of public health importance in West and sub-Saharan Africa.

The Unit also aims to address the persistently high burden of maternal and neonatal mortality.

Another priority is to design and implement next-generation interventions against nutrition-related diseases through discovery science.

In addition, the Unit is committed to strengthening research on non-communicable diseases, which are an increasing concern in the region.

Specialist engineering consultancy MAT has been appointed to deliver the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) services design for the CL3 laboratory, from RIBA Stage 2 through to construction.
