A prestigious flooring installation at AstraZeneca’s global manufacturing site in Macclesfield, Cheshire has been completed by the Stonhard Group.
Contracted by Boulting Environmental Services (BES), Stonhard – the leading manufacturer of epoxy resin flooring, wall and lining systems - designed and installed a high performance flooring system as part of the refurbishment of an existing warehouse into a state of the art pharma packaging facility.
AstraZeneca’s Macclesfield site is the company’s European centre for packing and distributing to 130 global markets. It’s also its second largest global manufacturing facility for medicines such as legacy prostate cancer drug Zoladex.
The global pharmaceutical company is a long-standing customer of BES - design-led construction experts who have provided multi-disciplinary engineering services to AstraZeneca’s Macclesfield site for almost 20 years. On this particular job, a large-scale flooring solution was required, and BES recommended Stonhard.
The Stonhard Group in the UK now includes hygienic flooring installation specialists Kemtile - offering a single source solution to customers in pharmaceutical and healthcare markets. They work with an increasing number of leading international brands in the UK including Reckitt Benckiser, GSK, Accord Healthcare, Alltrista Plastics and Thermo Fisher Scientific.
Stonhard installed a total of 6500m2 of high-performance epoxy systems throughout AstraZeneca’s new pharma production facility and cleanroom.
The flooring system design included Stonfil OP2 primer. Specifically designed to eliminate osmotic blistering of the floor caused by excess moisture occurring in slabs on or below grade, it was specified to overcome previous osmosis issues at AstraZeneca. It’s a three-component polymer osmotic pressure-resistant grout that can be used with all Stonhard flooring systems.
Stongard MR was specified for the plant rooms and workshop areas. It’s a nominal 1mm thick flooring system developed for positive side waterproofing applications - protecting areas below mechanical rooms, pump and mezzanine floors.
And Stonhard’s Stontec ERF system was also specified and installed in the new-build cleanroom. This high performance decorative flake flooring epoxy-based system is dense, stain-resistant and available in an extensive range of finishes and colour options.
It can be brought to life through an online visualiser that lets you design and blend colors for a virtual flooring experience by simply selecting the environment or uploading a photo. Stontec ERF is a popular choice with design teams for pharma labs and is the perfect product for quick installations.
Dave Greaves, Senior Construction Manager at BES, said: “This is the first project that we’ve undertaken with the Stonhard team and we were immediately impressed with their knowledge and experience, which was clear from the solution that they developed in response to our brief.
“Add to this the product quality and reputation of Stonhard systems in pharma and healthcare facilities across the globe, and it made perfect sense for our client. They did an excellent job.”
Stonhard’s Contracts Manager Steve Lyon said: “Stonhard’s 90-years’ experience and knowhow gained in pharma and wider sectors underpinned the design and installation of this flooring project for AstraZeneca.'
