US packaging specialist Ampac has introduced a unit-dose packaging format for health and beauty products.

The butterfly pack is for single-handed dispensing using a sachet format. It is made from two high barrier films – a flexible top web and a semi-rigid forming web. To dispense, the pack is picked up by using one hand. By squeezing the opposite edges towards each other, the butterfly pack folds and “snaps” open providing a controlled release of the contents.

Advantages include accurate product dosing, which eliminates product overfill, controlled dispensing to avoid accidental spills, lower cost than bottles and tubes and improved image quality for branding and logos.

The butterfly pack is produced on the EasySnap 3 automatic vertical form-fill-seal machine with three lanes, which forms the four-sided sealed package.

The pack can be used for all types of liquids and flowable wet products such as creams, lotions, cleaners, shampoos, hand sanitisers, food additives and more.

Ampac’s director of innovation, Sal Pellingra, said: ‘This is a unique innovation combining rigid and flexible barrier films into a consumer friendly dispensing sachet that is convenient and fun to use.’

Ampac is Canada-based EasyPack Solutions’ exclusive distributor in North America.

Knowlton Development Corporation, based in Quebec, Canada, provides contract manufacturing for production and filling of the pack.
