Modernisation of eBeam services used for both radiation sterilisation and radiation crosslinking of plastics

BGS Beta-Gamma-Service, a specialist in the industrial application of beta and gamma radiation, is expanding its irradiation capacity at its facilities in Wiehl and Saal an der Donau, Germany.

The company is investing €8m in the modernisation of its eBeam services used for both radiation sterilisation and radiation crosslinking of plastics.

At the plant in Wiehl, near Cologne, a new 3.0-MeV electron accelerator with a power of 150kW is being installed, while at the plant in Saal an der Donau, the current irradiation capacity of 10MeV electron accelerator facility is to be doubled. Both systems are used for the sterilisation of medical devices as well as for the crosslinking plastics.

The completion of both initiatives is planned for the first quarter of 2015.

The company, founded in Wiehl in 1981, now operates radiation plants at three locations in Germany: Wiehl, Bruchsal and Saal an der Donau.
