The market for antimicrobial coatings is forecast to grow to US$3.3bn by 2018, up from $1.6bn in 2012, according to a report by Transparency Market Research.

The Albany, NY-based market researcher, in its report, Antimicrobial Coatings Market – Global Industry Analysis, Market Size, Share, Trends, Analysis, Growth and Forecast, 2012–2018, segments the antimicrobial coatings market on the basis of product types (powder coating such as silver and other materials, as well as on surface modifications and coatings. The market has also been segmented on the basis of microbes such as E.Coli, Listeria, Pseudomonas and others), applications (medical/healthcare, indoor air quality and mould remediation) and geography (North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Rest of the World).

North America is the global revenue leader in antimicrobial coatings and dominates the demand for these products, the report says.

Active silver has emerged as the most widely used raw material for antimicrobial coatings, as it is believed to show the highest efficacy levels compared with other compounds.

The demand for antimicrobial coatings in the medical/healthcare sector is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.6% from 2012 to 2018.

Antimicrobial coatings used to improve indoor air quality are expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.8% over the six-year period.

In the case of mould formation, various coatings and products containing antimicrobial substances are being put to use as an aftercare method. Most of the buildings where mould aftercare is necessary are older than five years and hence the market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.1% from 2012 to 2018.

The key market players include AkzoNobel, Sherwin-Williams, Dow Microbial Control and Diamond Vogel Paints.

Many other companies, such as BASF, DuPont, Nippon Paint, RPM International, Royal DSM, Sono-Tek and others also have good market bases in antimicrobial coatings, the report says.
