This course will provide a brief introduction to the design of airborne particle counters, describing both light-scattering and condensation nucleus instruments. There will be a detailed review of how these instruments are employed in various industries in terms of practical use and relevant regulations and standards. In particular, the impact of the revision of the ISO 14644-1 and -2 standards will be discussed, including the stricter calibration demands of ISO 21501-4. Practical aspects of implementing a monitoring strategy will be reviewed, including the often challenging need to set effective alarm limits.
